Indigo

Indigo Silk Scarves

Eco & Indigo Fiber Arts uses plant-based natural dyes.

Indigo is the worlds oldest fiber colorant & amazingly it doesn’t dye directly from the leaves. It must have oxygen removed, “reduced” with an alkali in a process similar to fermentation. When fabric is dipped in the yellow green liquid it quickly turns blue when exposed to air as it oxidizes. This is another form of magic we experience in our creative process!

One of the most popular techniques for creating pattern with Indigo is the Japanese technique of Shibori.

Our Indigo dyeing process uses the plant dye Indigo, and involves multiple steps incorporating Japanese Shibori techniques of folding, tying and stitching.
